Program Possibilities: The Mosaic Program

Submitted by Danielle at the University of Alaska Fairbanks

Mosaic – The process of making pictures or designs by inlaying small bits of colored stone, glass, tile.

My fellow RA and I went and gathered so many fun things to play around with: old records from the transfer station (it's an upscale dump essentially), fancy plates from The Salvation Army, beautiful bottles from the glass recycling facility on campus, glaze tests and scrap metal from the art dept, nifty pasta, and magazines, magazines, magazines. We put this all on a table and gave our residents Styrofoam plates or tag board, Tacky Glue/glue gun and told them to go to town. There were about 30 people who filtered through and some stayed for over 2 hours! One girl brought down an old clock that didn't work and made a beautiful mosaic out of it. There were rave reviews from all that were involved.
