RA
Stories: She Wanted a View of the Water
Submitted
by an Anonymous RA
I'm a
Lead RA in our residence hall, and in our female residence hall we have
a resident that we have come to affectionately call "the crazy
lady". Ever since she moved in, she has not let the RA's rest,
she thinks we're Burger King and wants to have everything her way. One
particular night (while I wasn't even on duty) the other Lead RA called
me that "the crazy lady" called her, but she was watching
desk, and asked if I could go check on her.
I agreed
and went the resident's room, she said that her a/c had gone out and
asked what I could do. I told her I could either bring her a fan of
let her stay in one of our emergency rooms. She said she would like
a room with an a/c. I let her know that the emergency room was located
on the 2nd floor (she was on the first). Even though the room was just
to spend the night, she said it was too far, she wanted a closer room.
After
checking the floor plan I found her an empty room on the first floor
down the hall. In the girl's building the windows either face the parking
lot or a small lake facing campus. The room I found for her was facing
the parking lot, the same view her original room had.
She told
me she thought it would be really "cool" if she could get
a room facing the water. I told her there were no rooms, except the
RA room, but that it was not available. She asked why not and explained
that it had no furniture in it, and on top of that it was an RA room
and I could not let her stay in it, persistently she asked if see it,
I told her as there was no way she could stay there.
She then
told me to open up some of the rooms facing the water to see if I could
find her a spot, I told her that all the rooms had residents in them
already and that I just couldn't pop into their rooms at midnight checking.
Again
she asked if she could stay in the RA room because it would only be
for two nights, I told her no again because there was no furniture in
it. She then began to complain about moving all her stuff (all she needed
was her bed linens and maybe the two days worth of clothes, as she still
had access to her room).
After
having me check the floor plan several times, check several rooms and
make her a key to the spare room, she decides that she would rather
have the fan and stay in her room.
At this
point I was already incredibly frustrated with her, but I just smiled
and walked back to the lobby of the male building to get the fan for
her room. All this happened on Friday. On Sunday I went home for the
day, and I got a call from the same Lead RA that the same lady was complain
about her room again. I told her that she was on her own this time.
She later
told me that the resident made her check the floor plan again check
the rooms again and at the last minute decided to stay in her room.
This resident
is constantly calling our on call phone to complain about things so
much that the RA's have programmed her number into the phone as, you
guessed it "the crazy lady" so they'll be ready to answer
it.
One day
she called one of the other RA's and told him that there was only one
chair in her room and that she wanted two. The coordinator told him
to go ahead and get her a chair from the study room to get her quiet.
The poor guy lugged it from the study room on the third floor of the
male building (we don't have elevators) to the first floor of the girl's
building. She then called him back to complain that the chairs didn't
match.
We couldn't
believe it.
